Up until now, I had never really noticed the Netflix original series. I had heard a lot about Orange is the New Black because of all the hype it got, but I had never watched it or any of the others to be honest. They had always just been there as I had scrolled through Netflix looking for something to watch. Since I had pretty much gone through every teen drama there was on the website, I decided to read the descriptions of each of the Netflix originals. Peaky Blinders caught my eye.
The little description of the show that Netflix provides was very intriguing to me “A murderous English street gang. A veteran Irish lawman called in to bring them down. Blood will be shed.” Right of the bat I felt like it sounded very cool. For some reason, I had some serious Game of Thrones vibes going on, and that definitely made me want to maybe watch a little bit.
However, when I watch television shows, I really commit to them. It may sound a little crazy, but I normally research the show start to finish, and if I think it sounds good and potentially has a few cliffhangers, and romance, definitely romance I give it a go. I can tell by the second episode if I’m going to like it or not. But this show…this was something a little different.
First of all, the trailer for the show is very intense. When I went on IMDb, I noticed that there is a lot of fighting, a lot of drinking, and just a lot of men yelling at each other. But still, I wanted more so I read some synopsis’s online to get some more feedback. However, since this was a show set in Europe that Netflix just happened to pick up for America, there wasn’t much to read up on. But, there was a Wikipedia article that had a whole lot of information regarding this show. What I found most interesting about this show was the time period it was set in. It is supposed to be set just after World War I. Also the location really intrigued me as well. I feel like anytime I personally had thought of gang violence in films, it had been related to what I watched in the GodFather movies, but this was something totally different. This was set in Birmingham England, which I had never really thought of at all, let alone the gang violence there.
The gang that this is centered around is supposed to be lethal. On IMDB in a synopsis, it says that they “carry lethal razors in their peaked caps, who make money from illegal betting and the black market.” The boss of this gang (Tommy), played by Cillian Murphy, is nothing short of cunning but yet also in a weird way, ambitious. Ironically, in the trailer for the show, he is standing with a group of men (men who I assume to be his gang members) and he is yelling at them not to fight. He then turns around and pushes some guy for approaching him showing right then and there what type of character he is.
Each season of the show is set two years after each other, and it is no secret that because of the growing dangers of the world during the years, the gang becomes more lethal, and with the growing empires of the world collapsing, Tommy realizes that he is probably in way over his head with the crime he thought he could always control. It is hard to pick up on that on your own right off the bat, so I really suggest reading synopsis’s like I did on Wikipedia and IMDb to get information like that, it will make the experience of watching the show much better.
I also learned from reading on IMDb that Tommy is kind of crazy. Circumstances made him this way, because he fought in WW1 and now is pretty messed up from his war days. However, from what i’ve seen of him so far I like him a lot and respect his character and the choices that were made for him by the writers of the show.
Long story short, the moral of this whole article is to never just scroll past the Netflix originals again. Give Peaky Blinders a chance like I am. It may seem a little boring to you, and you may not want to go to the lengths of research like I did, but I promise this European war show is definitely worth your time.
