SEESO, an over-the-top subscription service owned by NBCUniversal, is set to launch new comedy series, Debate Wars with moderator, Michael Ian Black.
Seeso went live earlier this year on January 7, focusing exclusively on comedy. In addition to curating licensed TV shows through its platform like Saturday Night Live, The Office or The Kids in the Hall, the company has also been investing in a 20 original show lineup. Some of the shows being produced are HarmonQuest, a mixture of live action and animation, a comedic travel show called Hidden America with Johan Ray and The UCB Show with Upright Citizens Brigade creators Amy Pohler, Matt Walsh, Matter Besser and Ian Roberts.
The trailer for the new comedy series Debate Wars was launched today and the concept sets comedian against comedian in an opinion rivalry over major questions like, “Which is better: babies or old people, cats or dogs, nature or nurture?” The series features a top-notch line up with Janeane Garofalo, Mike Lawrence, Judah Friedlander, Gilbert Gottfried, Grace Parra and Dave Hill to name only a few.
Seeso doesn’t plan on competing with the larger streaming media services that are already out there with a more generalized content offerings, but rather wants to focus on a large niche such as comedy.
“Big streaming services have created a paradox of choice – they’re great if you know exactly what to watch, but if you aren’t in the middle of a binge, the search can be near endless,” Evan Shapiro, Executive Vice President of NBCUniversal Digital Enterprises, noted in a statement. “By focusing on a specific, yet large niche, and providing a curated experience, we can help viewers find good stuff they might not or cannot find,” he added.
With dominant streaming media players such as Netflix, Hulu, HBO Now, Amazon Studio and other niche based operations popping up regularly these days, Seeso is betting on original programming to expand its subscriber usage of $3.99 per month.
Debate Wars is being directed by Liz Plonka and written by Brian McCann, both of whom come out of the Conan O’Brien team. The project is executive produced by Michael Ian Black, Dan Pasternack and Marc Turtletaub.
The series is set to launch September 22 exclusively on Seeso.
