Everyone’s favorite Youtube star Miranda Sings has gotten her own show on Netflix. It is a comedy series called Haters Back Off where Colleen Ballinger, (the real life actress who plays Miranda,) portrays Miranda’s family life. Miranda is described as a “confident totally untalented star on the rise, who continues to fall upward by the power of her belief that she was born famous—it’s just no one knows it yet.” The episodes will feature her, trying to be the famous person she believes she was born to be.
If you don’t know who Miranda Sings is, here is some background information on her. She was created in 2008, when her creator Colleen Ballinger made her first youtube video, about a young woman who is overall pretty talentless, but at the same time very self-centered about the talent that she does not have. She says she made these videos basically to make fun of the generation of young singers who are actually talentless that hope to find their fame by posting Youtube covers. Her videos consist of tutorials and descriptions of her daily events. There is a portion where she reads what she considers to be fan mail but is actually hate mail and she always responds “haters back off.” Coincidence that that is what her show is named? I think not.
There are other famous comedians slated to be in this comedy series as well. Angela Kinsey (who played Angela on The Office) is going to play Bethany, Miranda’s mother and Steve Little (who stared in Eastbound & Down, Adventure Time, and his current role as Todd on The Grinder,) will play Jim, Miranda’s uncle. Miranda never fails to disappoint, and she will be featuring our other favorite Youtube stars.
Netflix describes the show as “a bizarre family comedy, and a commentary on society today and our fascination with fame.” So, not only will it be a hit because fans are dying to see Miranda Sings off of Youtube but on an actual television show, but because it will dig a little deeper, and show what its really like when you truly believe you are meant to be famous, but obviously in a much funnier way because it is being portrayed by Miranda Sings.
It’s creators are of course Colleen Ballinger, but also her brother Christopher Ballinger. It is being produced by Brightlight Pictures. Critics say that this was one of Netflix’s smartest moves. She is already famous, with a huge fan base and they predict that if they are watching her videos weekly on Youtube, they will be just one click away and have no problem watching on Netflix. It will attract young fans who either hope to make it, or who know deep down that they never will. Youtubers have a very big influence on what young people watch, so a series featuring them will be the right amount of success.
The 8 episode series is set to be released on October 14, 2016.
