Stepping Mat

In this female dramatic monologue, LYNN talks to her girlfriend about how terrible she’s been treating her boyfriend and needs advice on changing her ways.

LYNN:  I don’t know how he does it.  He must be the most patient man I ever met in my life.  I push his buttons, deliberately at times I must admit and yet he never breaks his cool.  I don’t think I ever met anyone quite like him…

I don’t know why I sometimes find the need to jab at him, like he’s my personal punching bag.  (beat)  He’s a stress reliever for me but I think I’m too much.  He’s told me…he said, “Lynn, you need to be kinder to me darling, please.”  That’s it.  That’s all he’s said but I can tell that’s his way of letting me know he’s beginning to get fed up with me.

I just think I have a tendency to take out my negative energy on him because I know he’s strong enough to absorb it.  It’s not right and I need to figure out a way to prevent myself from treating him like my stepping mat.  (beat)  I don’t want him to leave me…do you have any advice you can give me?  Please, he truly is everything to me and I need to adjust my behavior, before it’s too late.
